329000_shame.jpgI found him, and it didn’t take much work. It always kind of amazes me when someone seems to have a pretty “white-hat” appearance, and then you discover such blatant black-hat tactics.

In case you’re wondering what I’m talking about, in the submissions for today’s Carnival of the Capitalists, there were about 10 entries from a group of blogs, all of which were set up fairly recently, using the same basic layout, and (most importantly) were using articles from EzineArticles without proper attribution to the author or EzineArticles — and in almost every case they were cutting out the author resource box, which means this was being done by hand, and deliberately.

Welcome to the August 20, 2007 edition of Carnival of the Capitalists. While blog carnivals have become all the rage lately, this one is the grand-daddy of them all, at least for business blogs. It’s one of the few that still travels from blog to blog each week (as a carnival should — that’s why they’re called carnivals, folks!), and I’m happy to be hosting it this week on my new blog, Revenue River. More and more we’re seeing this trend in social media… revenue sharing with the social media and social networking content providers who are really the ones bringing eyeballs to these sites. The latest really cool addition to this that I’ve discovered is TheNewsRoom.

TheNewsRoom allows you to embed individual stories or a player featuring multiple stories, like the one below, on your site. Then they embed advertising within the player and you get a revenue share from it (more after the player).

No Pitch? Oh Really?

708589_sale.jpgA couple of days ago, I ripped on AuthorityBlackBook.com a bit. Dave Taylor took me to task over it, saying I was over-generalizing based on the one issue in that post. But there’s certainly more than one issue, so here’s part 2 of my critique.

And by the way, I’ll just go ahead and give a teaser that I actually have read the e-book now, and for the most part, it’s pretty good — certainly worth the free download and an hour to read it. I’ll do a review of it in part 3, but for now, I’m going to talk about the sign-up process a little more.

Now, these guys (and a few gals) really know how to write good sales letters, compelling squeeze pages, and so on. And a lot of them have figured out how to make some pretty good money by leveraging blogs, MySpace, and so on.

But fairly often, they do something really bone-headed that shows that they still just don’t completely get it.

I’ve done the math on GPT (Get Paid To) sites — get paid to read e-mails, get paid to take surveys, etc. — and if you do everything they send you, you’re probably only going to net about $8 an hour (but you can improve that).

Now, that beats the heck out of a minimum-wage job in a cubicle or a fast-food restaurant, and it doesn’t cost you a dime to participate and get started. Also, a lot of the work takes place a few seconds or a few minutes at a time. So if you’re home-bound and have a lot of distractions, it still works for you, whereas a traditional job and even a lot of work-at-home opportunities might not.

The secret, though, to making better money at these things is knowing how to watch for the better payout opportunities and taking advantage of them.
