Carnival of the Capitalists Spammer Exposed
August 20, 2007 |
I found him, and it didn’t take much work. It always kind of amazes me when someone seems to have a pretty “white-hat” appearance, and then you discover such blatant black-hat tactics.
In case you’re wondering what I’m talking about, in the submissions for today’s Carnival of the Capitalists, there were about 10 entries from a group of blogs, all of which were set up fairly recently, using the same basic layout, and (most importantly) were using articles from EzineArticles without proper attribution to the author or EzineArticles — and in almost every case they were cutting out the author resource box, which means this was being done by hand, and deliberately.
So who’s the culprit? Here’s all the evidence:
whois: BasicAccountingBlog.com
whois: BusinessManagementLife.com
whois: CreativeAdvertisingBlog.com
whois: GoodCustomerServiceBlog.com
whois: FreeFranchiseInformationBlog.com
whois: ProductivityPlanner.com
whois: SmallHomeBusinessBlog.com
whois: BryanCFleming.com
And yes, I know the street addresses aren’t all the same, but the e-mail addresses connect the records where the street addresses don’t match.
The URLs of the stolen articles are posted on the CotC post, along with the proper authors and links to the articles on EzineArticles.
I’ve reported this to EzineArticles and am contacting the copyright holders one by one so that they can take appropriate action. If anyone else has any suggestions on other measures to take, please let me know. I’m off to research splogging and see what else can be done.

Allen, thank you very much for bringing these guys to light. I am going through the past carnivals I have hosted to weed them out.
I was right in suspecting something amiss a month ago when I visited their blogs and did not find any information on their about pages.
Thanks again.
Scott - thank youfor posting the list of splogs. I had just written an article about why your “About” page is going to become more prominent, as I have noticed an terrific increase in my articles from my subscription newsletter and my articles on my blogs and in Ezine Articles being reprinted - and often without attribution.
Then Louise Manning at http://thehumanimprint.typepad.com/ kindly pointed me towards your site where you had listed a number of splogs.
When I host carnivals I do check the blogs and that can take some time when you have 70 plus submissions - but I think it is worth it and also the posts we reference reflect our personal brand and reputation.
It will be interesting to see the response you get from Ezine Articles.
In the meantime we need to make sure that we are tracking our own articles using Google Alerts - that is how I’ve found many of my articles across the web in the first instance.
Charan A. from Carnival of Small Business Issues has posted info about some splogs that I detected today. If you are interested in additional info, please, contact me.
Thanks for this post. I recently started a blog and all of a sudden I’m getting comments that seemed very out of place. This really helped me realize that they weren’t meaningful comments!
Looks like akismet is catching them. Saw this, and their posts looked legit, but after reading up, i wont let this through. Thanks for the heads up.
